Fall 2022 Group Classes

These classes are offered in partnership with Wayland Recreation, and registration is via the Wayland Recreation website. You do NOT need to be a Wayland resident to sign up - they are open to all!

After reading the descriptions here, please go to their site to register. Select "Fall Youth Programs" and scroll down the list till you find the music classes near the bottom.

Fall Group Classes Include: 

Small Group Intro to Flute, age 5-7 (new!)
Small Group Intro to Guitar, age 6-7 and 8-9
Small Group Intro to Piano, age 6-7
Small Group Intro to Violin, age 4-6
Fall Fiddling Fun for Strings including Guitar, age 7-12
Music Creating and Arranging for String Players, age 11-18 (new!)

Small Group Intro to Flute (new!)

Saturdays, fall semester: 15 weeks, 9/24/22 - 2/4/23 (no class 10/8, 11/26, 12/24, 12/31, 1/14) 

12:30 - 1:15 - age 5-7 with a caregiver

Think your child is too young to learn flute? Think again! In our upbeat class, your child will get a great start on flute through creative, playful activities including games, movement and song. Brain plasticity for music and language is at a peak, and our child-friendly beginner flute makes it easy for young kids to start developing flute skills. Don't miss this prime age to start an instrument!

Our professional instructor uses a developmentally appropriate approach, and works with children and parents together. No prior musical experience is needed for either, and there's plenty of individual attention in this small class. You will learn how to support your child’s learning at home, and your child will love playing for you! Class fee includes a Nuvo silicone beginner flute, plus book and CD for each child, all provided at first lesson and yours to keep.

Fee: $455 per semester including “Toot” beginner flute, book and CD that are all yours to keep.

Small Group Intro to Guitar

Wednesdays, fall semester: 15 weeks, 9/21/22 - 1/25/23 9/28/22 - 2/1/23 (no class 10/5, 11/23, /12/28, /1/4) 

3:00 - 3:45 - age 6-7

4:00 - 4:45 - age 8-9

Learn to play the acoustic guitar in a fun class designed to engage and inspire! Students begin with basic techniques, simple songs, rhythms, and beginning chords, in a relaxed setting including singing, movement and games. As they progress through the program they'll learn to play both by ear and by reading music.

Includes a loaner acoustic guitar in appropriate size for child, plus book and CD to keep.

Class size: minimum 3 students, maximum 6 students

Fee: $455 per semester including a loaner guitar and footstool, plus book and CD to keep.

Mondays, fall semester: 15 weeks, 9/19/22 - 1/30/23 (no class 10/10, 10/31, 12/26, 1/2, 1/16) 

5:05 - 5:50 - age 6-7

Want your child to try out the keyboard and learn basic playing and reading skills, but not quite ready to commit to private piano lessons? Learn to play the piano in this fun, relaxed class designed to engage and inspire!

Students begin with keyboard geography, simple 5-finger songs, rhythms, and beginning chords, in a relaxed setting including singing, movement and games. As they progress through the program, they’ll learn to play both by ear and by reading music, and to compose their own pieces. 

Includes a listening CD and a practice CD with special tracks for each week, music book, parent book, notation games pack, opportunities for composing, and more. Don’t have a keyboard? We’ll lend you a table-top one to get started (for a returnable deposit) and can advise you on purchase.

Tuesdays, fall semester: 15 weeks, 9/20/22 - 1/10/23 (no class 10/27, 12/27)

No prior musical experience is needed for either, and there's plenty of individual attention in this small class. You will learn how to support your child’s learning at home, and your child will love playing for you! Correct size violin for your child provided for class and home use, plus book and CD to keep.

Fall Fiddling Fun for Strings including Guitar

Wednesdays, fall semester: 14 weeks, 9/21 - 1/18 (no class 10/5, 11/23, /12/28, 1/4)

5:30 - 6:15, age 7-12

If you can violin/viola/cello/bass/guitar - you can fiddle! String players of any instrument, from near-beginner to advanced, can join in and will be able to participate at their own level with our customized curriculum.
You'll meet the repertoire and styles of different fiddling traditions including Irish, Scottish, American and more, and learn fun fiddling techniques such as the chop, double chop, waterfall, wiggle and flick! By the end of the session students will have their own repertoire of fun fiddling tunes that they know by heart.

Music Creating and Arranging for String Players (new!)

Fridays, fall semester, 15 weeks:  9/23/22 - 1/27/23 (no class 11/11, 11/25, 12/22, 12/29)

5:05 - 6:05, age 11-18

Students of violin, viola, cello and bass learn creative arranging skills that will allow them to reimagine music in new ways - taking melodies from folk and pop music and rearranging them for a string band. Students will learn fundamental string accompaniment techniques including shuffling, chopping, and chords, and will learn melodies by ear. From there, they'll be grouped into a band to arrange their very own music!
